What causes odour in our refrigerator?

Do you sometimes experience strange smells when you open your refrigerator, but cannot seem to pinpoint what exactly caused it? I have gathered some useful information and hope it would help you too!

First of all, strong-smelling ingredients such as onions and garlic would definitely spread their smell within the fridge if they are not stored in air-tight containers, not forgetting it would also affect the flavour of your other stored food.

Sometimes, the nose knows when something's not right. Foul odour in the fridge can be a sign that certain food has spoiled and isn't safe to be consumed. Bacteria produces harmful gases as they break down food, creating unpleasant smells. Therefore, if something smells off, it's best to trust your nose and toss it out to avoid any tummy ache or food poisoning.

The temperature of your fridge would also impact the chances of odour. If it's too warm, bacteria can multiply very quickly, leading to faster food spoilage and emitting pungent smell. Keep your fridge at the recommended temperature of around 3°C (37°F) to slow bacterial growth and prevent odour.

Regular cleaning does not just only keep your fridge tidy, but also keep out odour. Spills and crumbs would attract bacteria and mould growth that brings along with them funky stench. Take the time to give your fridge a good cleansing every now and then to keep it smelling fresh!

Prevention is cure.

  1. Place a few fresh lemon slices in your fridge for a refreshing scent, and replace them every few days.

  2. Coffee absorbs and neutralises any scent and odour. Place a cup of coffee grounds in your fridge to work its magic.

  3. Place activated charcoal beads in a fridge case holder to absorb toxic gases and odour. They are also eco-friendly as you can reuse them after releasing the absorbed toxins under strong sunlight outdoors. Click image below to find out more.
